“I’m a high school kid in 1980. Recall the previous year Bob Crable blocks the last minute field goal in the Big House to defeat Michigan in closing seconds? (Side note: it’s because of Crable we got Oliver- he was a Moeller High school classmate) This is a big game- the Wolverines are looking for revenge. I’m with my brother and we just can’t find any tickets to buy. A South Bend kid peddling programs, right out of a Dickens novel, tells us for $20 bucks, he can get us into the stadium if we pretend to sell programs. We put on these vesty things that hold programs and sure enough, we are in the stadium, but without tickets. Having been to many home games, we head to the chaos of the student section where you don’t need a seat, and the guards were not really looking for tickets. It’s a back and forth epic struggle. It comes down to a last minute drive where Dan Devine inserts freshman QB Blair Kiel. Somehow, with a couple of seconds left, the offense has managed to get close enough for a field goal attempt. Harry Oliver lines up for a 51 yard attempt. The wind stops. There is not a sound in the stadium. Then-! because we are in the student section and can see nothing-I hear a sonic boom. Or something that feels like a sonic boom. The score board changes to 29-27. Homeric!”-Kathleen Keifer
