Keifer + the classic game MONOPOLY

Keifer’s “California Dreamin’ Edition” Monopoly

Keifer’s “California Dreamin’ Edition” Monopoly

I grew up in a cold, dark place called Chicago, so when I moved to Malibu, California, in 1996, the colors, culture, and capitalism seduced me completely. I began to paint the landscapes and iconic lifestyles of the Golden State. I also love Monopoly. It’s hilarious to discover ruthless Uncle Pennybags’ killer instinct in my friends and family!

Creating a California themed monopoly game has really been a career highlight for me. To capture the Golden State’s diversity of architecture and lifestyles, on a Monopoly board?

First  pass Go! and drive to the beach in a Woodie. You see two homes on wheels: a VW Van and an Airstream trailer. Then drive up into the California mountains, take a breath, and smell the pines and campfires. Watch the sunset from your cabin. Pass Jail (don’t get stuck!) and go right on through the classic suburbia of the California Bungalow. Wave to your neighbors on their deep suburban porches!

Continue up the PCH to San Francisco. Flirt with the flamboyant Victorian Painted Ladies and crash on your friend’s couch. Head to the desert to experience the cool charm and clean lines of Mid-Century Modern architecture. Poolside, there’s Sinatra and Martinis all day! Let’s hop on a jet at Palm Springs airport and zip to LAX. Visit the yellow Monopoly spaces, representing the sunny modern beach house, with exterior living rooms and links between the entrance, highway, and sea - but be quick! Real estate is getting more expensive as we travel the board.

Now round the corner and enter the golden land of Hollywood, the dreams as big as the houses built by the Stars. Careful, though! Many fortunes and dreams have been lost here. And finally, two of the most famous hotels in California substitute for Boardwalk and Park Place. The Beverly Hills Hotel sits on Sunset Boulevard, next to The Del Coronado on Orange Boulevard - both replete with movie magic, California history, and modern luxury.

Every bit of this new board has been dipped in the gold of California Dreamin.’ The railroads are now airports. There is a jet mover! A Tip Jar - let’s pay it forward! - instead of Community Chest. All the cards have a California theme. Let's try to get Uncle Pennybags off his couch in the Free Parking space and keep him out of jail!  I think he loves his new west coast lifestyle as much as I do!

Monopoly California Dreaming Second Edition

PLAY MONOPOLY WITH STYLE! Artist Kathleen Keifer has added a new twist that brings even more West Coast style to Monopoly California Dreaming. The Second Edition still features the hottest neighborhoods across the Golden State, but the artist swapped out the Jail space for a Pool Party! If you run into some bad luck, at least you get to wait out your stay while relaxing in the sun. The colorful canvas wraps around a solid box cover, which can be lifted off to reveal the custom game components designed by Keifer, including an iconic Surf Wagon token!
